Each year, OEF recognizes an “Education Hero” for his / her outstanding service to public education in the Ojai Valley. OEF's Education Heroes are honored at "OEF Celebrates!" our annual Fall Fundraiser. Honorees include Teachers, Administrators, Students, Volunteers and Community Leaders.

For the 2019 - 20 School year, OEF is thrilled to honor Becky Beckett, Principal of Chaparral High School, Ojai Adult School and Ojai Independent School for her years of service to our public schools. Becky's hard work and commitment is extraordinary, and the OEF Board is humbled by her passion and desire to ensure that both children and adults have access to the quality public education they need to achieve their dreams.

Becky is a native of Southern California, and began her time at Ojai Unified School District as a student, attending Topa Topa and Mira Monte Elementary Schools, Matilija Junior High School, Nordhoff High School, and then Thacher School. She attended Yale University studying Music and Theater, before deciding to pursue something more “practical”. She received her undergraduate degree from George Mason College in Environmental Biology and Public Policy.

Becky then tapped into her passion for education, and earned her Masters and Teaching Credential from Cal State Lutheran. She also obtained teaching credentials in Science Authorization, Biology, Earth & Space Science, Chemistry, Foundational Math, Social Science, Health Science, & Physical Education.

Becky began her education career teaching 3rd grade at Monica Ros in Ojai, then at Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Oxnard. She returned to Ojai in 2001 and joined the Ojai Unified School District at Nordhoff High School where she taught the Sciences. She served as a Science teacher until 2014, providing instruction in various disciplines including Biology, Lab Physical Science, Environmental Field Studies, Sports Medicine, and Anatomy/Physiology. She also taught Algebra during summer school.

Later that year, Becky was appointed Dean of Chaparral High School. Shortly thereafter she became Principal of three schools housed on the Chaparral Campus - Chaparral High School, Ojai Adult School, and Ojai Independent School, a campus known for providing an innovative approach and alternative educational experience for young students who aspire to learn in a non-traditional environment, as well as for adults who seek to enhance their personal and professional skills.

While at Chaparral, Becky has led and implemented various initiatives and programs that benefit both young and adult learning including:

  • Launching and managing the school’s robust Career Technical Program which offers students hands-on experience in Hospitality, Horticultural, Graphic Design and Construction, as well as job shadowing and internships;

  • Ensuring all students have access and exposure to area colleges with site visits to Santa Barbara City College, Ventura College, Oxnard College, and Cal State University Channel Islands;

  • Providing instructional opportunities for adults, including ESL Parents, to earn their High School Diploma;

  • Organizing a formal meal program for students, allowing Chaparral to become a Title 1 School and qualify for critical Federal Funding.

Becky’s supportive family includes her husband Steve is a Software Engineer, and her now adult daughters Emma and Anna who both attended San Antonio Elementary School, Matilija Junior High School and Nordhoff High School.

Becky’s philosophy regarding public education is simple: “Public education is an important means for giving everybody a seat at the table. It is tied to my passion for equity.”

Given her extraordinary commitment to Public Education and the Ojai Valley, it's no wonder the Ojai Education Foundation is proud to honor Becky Beckett as our 2019 Education Hero!
